Baiada optimizes 250,000 test samples per year with the QLIMS solution.

Baiada, a leading food enterprise with over 100 years of experience, has selected QLIMS to replace its manual systems and manage more than 250,000 samples per year. The solution delivers breakthrough efficiency:

- 100% Process Digitization: Eliminates hundreds of handwritten records; units self-register samples directly into the system.

- Instrument Integration: Results from VIDAS, TEMPO, and FOSS NIRS are transmitted directly into QLIMS, ensuring real-time data.

 - Personnel Optimization: Frees up 1.5 Full-Time Equivalents (FTEs) from paperwork to focus on specialized laboratory tasks.

 - Rapid Deployment: The system went live officially after only two weeks of testing.

 - Flexibility & Scalability: Easily integrates additional equipment and expands management to livestock and vaccine sectors.

QLIMS Case Study: Baiada Poultry – A Solution for the Food Industry

In this article, we will explore how the QLIMS solution has supported laboratories in the food industry in overcoming operational challenges. Baiada is the organization behind well-known brands such as Lilydale Free Range Chicken and Steggles. With a history spanning over a century, Baiada's dedication to providing reliable poultry products has remained steadfast over time.

To ensure product safety and consistency, the company applies rigorous poultry flock monitoring standards based on precise microbiological and serological analyses of both raw and cooked products, along with feed testing. With over 250,000 samples tested annually, speed, accuracy, and traceability are key for Baiada's modern quality management department.

Challenges

Managing growing records, especially when involving large volumes of data, can be an overwhelming task for laboratories. As testing requirements become more complex, laboratories need to find new ways to handle the massive amounts of data generated from testing activities. This includes everything from ensuring data accuracy to maintaining privacy and security. Baiada's laboratory traditionally managed testing records using an in-house developed Microsoft Access database. While this system met basic record-keeping needs, the type and volume of poultry monitoring analysis required by the team were becoming increasingly complex and resource-intensive.

Solution

After reviewing various solutions, the team quickly determined that the QLIMS solution could meet Baiada's needs in terms of customization at an affordable price. Instead of attempting to integrate QLIMS into the existing database, the company decided to start completely fresh with a brand-new system to provide a more scalable solution for the team.

Implementation Process

Despite being mentally prepared for a long and complex implementation process, the team was very pleased with how quickly the system became operational. "The transition to QLIMS was quite rapid. We had 2 weeks of trial runs, and then we went live – that was it. We feel very confident in the system and the support team. They are truly professional and dedicated experts."

Results

The greatest benefit, according to Ms. Anne-Marie Curle (Food Technologist and QS Manager at Baiada), is: "Definitely the time savings! In the past, we received hundreds of handwritten QA test requests every week, all of which had to be manually entered into the database. Now, processing plants can register requests directly into the QLIMS system. This has freed up staff to focus on their laboratory expertise instead of being bogged down by paperwork."

"We process about 500 samples per week – QLIMS has effectively freed up the equivalent of 1.5 Full-Time Equivalents (FTEs) so we can reallocate them to more critical tasks within the laboratory."
